WIHSEA is Wisconsin Scholastic Esports

The Wisconsin High School Esports Association is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is growing scholastic esports across the state of Wisconsin, creating opportunities for students and school communities through esports. Our mission is to govern, support, and promote the growth of scholastic esports through community development, advocacy, equitable participation, and interscholastic competition to enrich the educational experience.

In 2018, a small group of volunteer educators and school staff who had been passionately working on developing esports in their own schools founded WIHSEA as a non-profit organization in order to help develop infrastructure for interscholastic esports competition and to be a guide for school in Wisconsin with students who wanted to compete in esports.

Since then, WIHSEA has seen massive growth in just a few short years. We started with seven schools and have exploded to 100+ schools from every corner of the state competing through our organization and we continue to add more member schools each month.

Goals

  • Redefine Athletic Culture
  • Diversify Opportunities for Student Participation
  • Increase Collegiate and Career Pathways
  • Promote Good Mental and Physical Health
  • Honor the Importance of Play

Why WIHSEA?

By Schools for Schools

WIHSEA is made up of educators and school staff members all of whom are volunteers working hard to provide the best possible experience for our students.

Local

WIHSEA serves over 100 school districts from Superior to Kenosha. We’re all Wisconsinites and we want to show off what we got here in our great state!

WIHSEA Tournaments

WIHSEA provides governance and infrastructure for organized esports competition in Wisconsin at the high school and middle school levels.

Regular Season

Regular season tournaments are run in the Fall, Winter, and Spring. These tournaments lead up to state playoffs and championship events. Visit The Games page for more details on what games are played during which seasons.

State Playoffs & Championships

State playoffs and championships are organized for the ends of the regular Fall, Winter, and Spring seasons. Championship tournaments are in-person events and are hosted by sponsor venues or member schools. Previous venues include Madison College, Fox Valley Lutheran High School, and Northcentral Technical College.

Special Events & Invitationals

Special event tournaments are one-off events that are often held between regular seasons. Invitational tournaments are generally organized by member schools or sponsors and held over Winter or Summer breaks.

Pilot Tournaments

Pilot Tournaments are organized independent or regular season titles.

Community Tournaments

Community tournaments run every month in addition to the regular season tournaments. They feature additional games that players and coaches can participate in. Visit Community Tournaments for more details on games and their approximate starting dates.

Why Esports?

More Than Just Games

We believe that there is so much more to esports than the games. This is why we have been helping students develop real-world skills, by offering internships in graphic design, broadcasting, community management, and more!

Reach New Students

For many students, scholastic esports is their first extracurricular. Esports provides an opportunity for non-traditional athletes to compete for their schools and learn the same great principles of teamwork, practice, and competition as with traditional sports.

Improved Academics

In addition to allowing students to get more involved with their schools, scholastic esports can help motivate students to greater academic achievement in order to maintain academic eligibility. Many students that participate in scholastic esports are interested in pursuing STEAM related careers.
